5/2 Hyperfixation List - Japan Inspired
Erin Austin
Wow my first ever Hyperfixation List. I only thought about this for 6 months and had weeks upon weeks of content before I finally just published one. I hope you enjoy some of the things that have been bouncing around upstairs rent free for me!
I got back last Monday and I’m back into the full swing of things with the spa and home and Opal but def still very much thinking about Japan.
Eating:
Onigiri...cheap & packable snack at all convenience stores I went to. Potentially my new work lunch hyperfixation meal. Will report back.
Drinking:
Only recently after describing it for not less than the 1000th time…..did I learn the term EINSPÄNNER. “a Viennese coffee drink featuring a shot of espresso topped with a generous layer of whipped cream and a dusting of cocoa powder. It's a classic Austrian coffee creation” I mean how many times did I need to describe a dollop of cream? First had this in Dubrovnik in my fave cup of coffee EVER that I have now had twice. Has it again in my matcha in Japan.
Anyways….matcha EINSPÄNNER is where it’s at. Been experimenting with heavy whipping cream and Torani French vanilla sweetener basic but it works and when it’s perfected I’ll drop the recipe.
Who in Richmond sells einspänner anything?!
Reading:
1Q84 by Haruki Marukami. A sort of play on our 1984, taking place in the city of Shibuya, where I went.
Slowed down my reading since I've gotten back so I'm only 1/3 of the way through. Don't let the length intimidate you, it's an easy read!
Watching:
Your Friend & Neighbor with John Hamm on Apple Tv... gotta use up my Apple TV membership and I'll then cancel it while I wait for the next season of Severance...
Also while I’m plugging John Hamm I feel obligated to shoutout Mad Men.
Listening:
I Said I Love You First: Selena Gomez & Benny Blanco her new mans?! Did you know he went to my rival high school?! My random fun fact, because wtf? Not usually a big Selenur fan but this was my offline-jam for much of Japan and I’m very into it.
Random Thoughts:
Japan really did force me to slow down in many ways. 24 hours of travel both ways, combined with having very little time that people back home were actually awake (my mom, my sister, Libby, my friends…), it felt like a bit of a time warp. I also didn’t have cell service and the competition arena didn’t have wifi (probably a good thing). I read so much, I listened a lot of music, and I was very ~present~. It reminded me of who and how I am when my brain can really truly turn off. I haven’t felt that TRULY truly since….maybe the Euro World Tour of 2022….my travel bender I went on in between quitting my job and starting my business. A week and a half is the longest I’ve gone without giving a facial since….i started the business!!
Being physically removed, as well as 13 hours time difference really forced a disconnection that was good for me. Being able to travel and say yes to amazing opportunities is why I started my business. And it also reminded me of how crazy my days are and truly how little personal, unscheduled, free time I give myself. So I am committing to intentional, work-free, fun Sundays….personal days Mondays to catch up on housework and chores….and a real and serious Admin Tuesday. And continuing to practice the very challenging skill of delegation and releasing control to my Queen Libby who has been helping me streamline and push many things behind the scenes.
State Park Challenge:
As seen on another Facebook post….i learned that Virginia has a Trail Master Program where you can win pins by visiting VA state parks and once you reach 35 you can be designated as a Trail MASTER! With a ceremony!!! As someone who is highly motivated with challenges and especially small tokens as prizes….obviously I’m signed up. Also, this feels like an opportune time to spend time and attention learning about our state parks and all the things they have going on. I’ve heard about the concert series at Pocahontas State Park too and have been meaning to look into that….*adds to summer bucket list*.
Want to join me in this fun (free!) challenge?
